I was living in a 3 bedroom apartment in San Rafael, California, 1979-80ish. My girlfriend and I were considering getting married to the point that we had started composing a guest list. Her mom was visiting from Berkeley and I heard them talking, through the door of my little bedroom recording studio. My girlfriend’s mom said (verbatim): “I really think you* (*i.e. my girlfriend) need a nice house and a white picket fence where you can have babies, and I think you should MARRY FOR MONEY.” (end quote...) Well, the songwriter in me jumped right on that, and I quickly and effortlessly wrote Marry For Money, inspired by the situation. We never did get married, and what’s ironic, was that her mom, about 15 years later, divorced her first husband, and consequently married for money herself. My girlfriend’s brother and I stayed friends and he was able to sneak my recording of Marry For Money into the DJ’s playlist for her mother’s “2nd marriage for money” wedding reception. Justice served...
lyrics
MARRY FOR MONEY
(Strider)
You walk in with the new Picasso
He’s an artist and he’s really intense
I can tell by his eyes, he’s a sensitive guy
But he ain’t got dollars or sense
He’s been talking like he’s feeling domestic
Finger-painting while you live in the red
Before you tie any knots, with a case of the hots
You better get this through your head
Marry For Money
Don’t be a fool
Don’t let the shuck and the jive
Of a loser get the better of you
Marry For Money
You’ll understand
When the bills come in
You’ll be glad you got a rich old man
Dodging rent in the warehouse district
On the floor with a siamese rat
When you stayed overnight, did the cockroaches fight?
Do you really wanna live like that?
You keep on telling me you think he’s romantic
I think you’re crazy not to see he’s a bum
If he tries to propose, shove the ring up his nose
Show me that you’re not so dumb
Marry For Money
Don’t be a fool
Don’t let the shuck and the jive
Of a loser get the better of you
Marry For Money
You’ll understand
When the bills come in
You’ll be glad you got a rich old man
I know that you live by your feelings
And I’m sure that your feelings are strong
But I got a feeling that you should be careful
Not to fall for Mr. Wrong
You can have all the men that you want to
Make sure they’re tall, and they’re cute, and they’re lean
But when you settle down, stop messing around
Make sure he’s got a lot of green
Marry For Money
Don’t be a fool
Don’t let the shuck and the jive
Of a loser get the better of you
Marry For Money
You’ll understand
When the bills come in
You’ll be glad you got a rich old man
Yeah!
Marry For Money
Marry For Money, now
You gotta have a lot of money
Yeah! Yeah!
Lots of money, money!
Wooo!
