I woke up from a dream (circa 1987-88) in the middle of the night and hung on for dear life to get every word of this sub-consciously delivered lyric avalanche. I had heard Grandmaster Flash and other rappers, so I decided to incorporate a rap over melodic hooks. As far as I what I had heard, in 1987, I had never heard anyone do that yet, though I’m sure there were people doing it. Was “Private Hell” the real birth of hip-hop? Another detail, is that the song was emotionally inspired by my 9 generations Samurai girlfriend...
lyrics
PRIVATE HELL virtually ready...check it over
(Strider)
(spoken) “Private Hell, get up!
I want 60 push-ups, I want 60 sit-ups
We’re gonna wash you out, shape you up
And send you straight to Heaven”
(sung) Private Hell
Stuck in the middle, Stuck in the middle
Private Hell
Stuck in the middle, Stuck in the middle
(spoken) “You’ve been giving us trouble
We’re gonna change that on the double
We’re gonna bring in the good
In all the new recruits
And you’re no exception
One, two, three - eight, nine, ten, Private Hell
We’ll be damn sure you won’t go public until
You clean up your act, shine your shoes,
Pay those dues, make sure every hair’s in place
We want best behavior
We can save you from those crazy streets you come from
So, keep it up
That new attitude. Huht!”
(sung) Private Hell
(spoken) “Get up!”
(sung) Torn in the middle, torn in the middle
(spoken) “Left, right, left, huht!”
(sung) Private Hell
Torn in the middle, torn in the middle
(spoken) “We know where you came from
We won’t take no half-ass brother
We want it all and we want no other
We’re gonna break you down until you cry for your mother
We’re gonna shake you up and blow you straight to heaven”
(Instrumental solo - electric guitar - Jon Strider)
(spoken) “Left, right, left, huht! “
(sung) Private Hell
(spoken) “Get Up!”
(sung) Stuck in the middle, Stuck in the middle
(spoken) “Huht!”
(sung) Private Hell
(spoken) “One, two, three!”
(sung) Stuck in the middle, Stuck in the middle
(spoken) “Attention!
Front and center! No back talkers!
There’ll be no repenters.
We’re serious about this mission
You’ve been living on devil’s food
But this ain’t no piece of cake
This is Life with a captial H
(background chant) “Left, Right, Left, Right, Left, etc...”
“We got the means to change your ways
We’re gonna launch this mess into outer space
We’re gonna shape you up and blow you straight to heaven
Get up! Get up! Get up! Get up!
(background chant) Left, Right, Left, Right, Left...
Get up! Get up! Get up!
(background chant) Left, Right, Left, Right, Left!”
