about

This song is a staple of my festival shows with the Jon Strider Band to this day. It also was commissioned by the Mason Dixon Book Hour, a syndicated radio show in the South, in the 1990's. Walter (Burch) and I wrote a lot of fun songs. I've always been enamored by the South, and Walter was from Texas. A great team! The charming bumper sticker created for this song by artist Janice Durand, is a rare and coveted thing.

lyrics

SHUT UP & EAT YOUR GRITS
(Strider/Burch)
Last week I sat down for a bite
At the spot I eat most everyday
I had my fill of talk alright
Sounded like the whinin’ cafe
Some folks were knockin’ the kids in town
Others were pullin’ the President down
All I know is this squawkin’ was gettin’ to me
(spoken): I wanted to tell ‘em

Shut Up & Eat Your Grits now
Shut Up & Eat Your Grits now
All this complainin’ aint’ entertainin’ to me
Shut Up & Eat Your Grits, now
Shut Up & Eat Your Grits now
If I’m not mistakin’ we’re still the land of the free

Next table gossip was flyin’
About who done what to whom and when
I said where’s the truth, where’s the lyin’
To much talk gettin’ under my skin
So I stood up to strut my stuff
I said this ol’ boy has had enough
Man I tell you, they couldn’t keep a lid on me
(spoken): "So I told ‘em"

Shut Up & Eat Your Grits now
Shut Up & Eat Your Grits now
All this complainin’ aint’ entertainin’ to me
Shut Up & Eat Your Grits, now
Shut Up & Eat Your Grits now
If I’m not mistakin’ we’re still the land of the free

I was born in a little country shed
All us kids tryin’ to sleep in one big bed it was rough!
Pulled together, took it day by day
What more can I say___

Shut Up & Eat Your Grits now
Shut Up & Eat Your Grits now
All this complainin’ aint’ entertainin’ to me
Shut Up & Eat Your Grits, now
Shut Up & Eat Your Grits now
If I’m not mistakin’ we’re still the land of the fre

Stop your bellyachin’, we’re still the land of the free
